The title has 3 meanings, relating to gambling, gains on the stock market and ultimately the conclusion of the story. Firstly, the title 'Paper' in reference to gambling, is referring about money, the one of the main focus of the story. 'Paper' in reference to gains on the stock market, refers to stock certificates, documents which certify stocks. Lastly, in reference to the conclusion of the story, 'Paper' also refers to the paper house.
2. For Lottery, do an analysis of 100 words in which you look at Ah Boh’s superstitions regarding gambling.
Ah Boh's addiction in gambling has led her to believing anything that could help her win. She believed that anything from new-born babies to events of a tragic like an accident would hold numbers that would help her win like the date of a special event or the license plate of a wrecked vehicle. She even believed that her dreams convey winning numbers and that offering joss-sticks to gods or her dead husband.
3. For The Rocking Horse Winner, write a paragraph of 100 words in which you point out who was responsible for Paul’s death.
In the Rocking Horse Winner, the person who was responsible for Paul's death should be his mother. Paul only gambled because he thought that he was lucky and could help his mother by winning money for her. Even though Paul had given her enough money, for her to pay her debts, she also wasted it on other unnecessary uses instead of saving it like spending it on new furnishing and hiring Paul a tutor. This caused the whisperings that has been bothering Paul to go mad and Paul was frightened of it. Paul died at the end of the story as he was thinking too much about winning that he entered a state of coma and died eventually. His death was indirectly caused by his mother who he wanted to win for.

ReplyDeleteDo you think Oscar and the gardener played any part in Paul's death? They were adults who could have intervened. His mother was the major factor in his death, nonetheless.
The death was indirectly caused by his mother,but it was bassett and his uncle who directly influenced him with betting on horses,making him want to win money to prove his luck by betting on horses
ReplyDeleteCome straight to the point!!! The irony of Paper is "Paper gains, paper house". The Rocking Horse Winner was quite convincing, but shouldn't Paul himself had a part to play for his death? Just a thought... :D
